A few years later, with more experience under his belt, Daniel released his EP Soleil de Plomb, a 3-track-EP that gained support from artists like AKA AKA, Karotte and many more. Now Daniel’s music stands for organic soundscapes, playful melodies and impulsive drum sets.
In September Daniel released his latest EP on Palea (Bayreuth) which consists of 4 both powerful and heartily crafted tracks. Diversity in nature and sound. Daniel Helmstedt’s new Plurality EP couldn’t be better described metaphorically. His tendency for melodic spheres in music emphasizes its manifold influences. The EP gives us a recurring awareness of the beauty of nature.
We were lucky enough to get the chance to talk with Daniel about his life in music.
Tell us about your earliest musical memory?
Very difficult! I guess it was during my childhood (at age 4 or 5) – I listened to the radio very early and later I recorded my own cassettes with my favourite music (very nerdy 😀 – mostly Saturday’s on radio Fritz) – most of the time I recorded that Trance and Eurodance-stuff. Influenced by this I bought a cheap program called “Magix Music Maker” where everything started. I guess that was the key point in 2005.
At what point in your life did you have that moment where you said to yourself “This is it. This is the type of music I want to create?”
Good question! I guess the real “this is it” moment was generated by producing the Plurality EP (starting in 2018).
Please list some of the most influential albums on your creative outlook and output:
Flora & Fauna and Mannigfaltig by Dominik Eulberg
Kiasmos’ album
Bloom by Rüfüs Du Sol
The Devil’s Walk by Apparat
What key pieces of gear/software are you using to define your sound?
Very simple:
– some VST-plugins (I guess the most common ones like Omnisphere, Arturia and so on)
– A pair of Adam 5x
– field recorder
– my ears 🙂
I do not own any specific hardware.
What inspires you outside of music? What do you turn to when the creative well runs a little low?
I take my shoes and go for a run – like 5 minutes away from my flat there is a nice track to “delete” everything and to start again refreshed! Or just grab your field recorder, take a walk and watch what happens.
Studio work and music creation or performing and interacting with a live audience, what do you prefer?
I would like to do more outside the studio – I do not like be a DJ (just to put in a stick) – I am not good at this – but I really love to set up a live act (which hopefully will come next year). I really love the audience’s reactions throughout playing or generating live music or sounds.
As an artist, it becomes apparent that there is a huge difference between the art and the business. Is there anything about the music scene that you would personally change?
Yeah sure – nowadays everything will be connected to the likes, the hype stuff or to just generate a big range. Some artists literally blow out one EP per week (like the same track on an on) – at this point, artists or musicians get out of my focus. That social-media-stuff definitely spoils the “real” music.
I guess artists should focus more on their creative process than on the social-media-stuff. Social media and music definitely belong together – but less usage of it would be better!
What can we expect from you in the near future? Any upcoming projects or gigs in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?
There will be 2 EP’s and a few remixes in the near future – I guess in early 2019.
Famous last words?
Thanks for letting me tell you some of my thoughts!
